Sleep and Your Fat CellsSleep has been shown to affect our fat cells! A new study from the University of Chicago, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, determined that four nights of sleep deprivation reduced insulin sensitivity in fat cells by a whopping 30 percent.

The less sensitive our cells are to insulin, the less our body produces the hunger-regulating hormone leptin. The less leptin we produce, the hungrier we are, and our sensors that tell us when we are full or satisfied don’t work properly. This can lead to overeating and weight gain or difficulty losing weight.

Is Overeating Preventing You From Reaching Your Full PotentialIf a plant gets too much water or sunlight it dies or doesn’t grow to its full potential.  If a human eats too much food on a regular basis, it too doesn’t grow to its full potential, creating physical disease and a poor self-image that can affect all areas of life from relationships to work.

For us humans, the effects of overeating generally are not immediate. The first evidence of overeating is usually weight gain, and that may not be immediate, but rather tends to “creep up” on us. It may take decades for illness to set in. Many people are not aware of having high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure or heart disease, because these don’t have recognizable symptoms until they become severe enough.

Being mindful of both what and how much you eat and drink, is the first step to awareness, regardless of whether you want or are ready to make any changes.

Maintaining Weight LossDid you know that half of all Americans who lose weight gain at least some of it back within a year, according to research published in the International Journal of Obesity.

It’s a lot easier to keep the weight off than to lose it all over again.  Maintaining weight loss is possible by creating life-long healthy habits and monitoring them. This includes:

1. Eating regularly, especially breakfast and eating moderately throughout the day, such as breakfast, lunch, dinner and one or two healthy snacks.

2. Consuming a variety of whole foods: fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds.

3. Being aware of portions and serving sizes.

4. Weighing yourself once or twice a week or being mindful of how your clothes fit will allow you to know if you have gained a few pounds. Then you can go back to what works for you to lose the weight and maintain your weight loss.

Love, Health & Happiness,

Phyllis
