Time To Take Out The Trash

Garbage in = garbage out, is a term often used when programming computers.  What if we looked at our brains like computers and acknowledged that we picked up some garbage along the way? By the time we are seven years old, we are pretty well programmed by the people who raised us, siblings, teachers, peers, religious organizations, television and society.

Think about the negative statements, judgments, rules and values that you were brought up with during childhood. You were too young to choose these, yet they became your primary programming for adulthood. Here are a few questions to show how “garbage in” produces “garbage out.” Are you kind to yourself?  Caught up in perfection? Tolerant of other’s mistakes?

As adults, we can begin to empty the garbage from our brains by becoming aware of the negative self-talk, fears, and self-defeating beliefs and habits that don’t serve us.  Thank them for being there and release them.  It’s time to take out the trash and let them go.  Make space for new ways of being towards yourself and others, with kindness and compassion.

What's Weighing You Down

What if achieving your desired healthy body and healthy weight wasn’t just about the food you eat?  What if unresolved thoughts, feelings, and experiences are what drives you to make the choices you make about your body? This includes what you feed it, if you exercise it, and basically whether you treat your body as a friend or foe.

Each one of us has gone through experiences throughout our lives that have been painful, fearful and heavy with emotion. Many people have experienced a significant illness, injury, loss, financial hardship, relationship or family conflict, and/or work or career related challenge.

What’s weighing you down? What experiences from your life, past or present, feel heavy? What burdens are you carrying around?  What’s weighing you down and preventing you from traveling with ease in a lighter healthier body?

The Mind Doesn’t Know The Difference

The mind doesn’t know if you actually did something or just thought about it. Research has shown that without a stressful event actually happening, we can create anxiety along with the chemical release of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, just by thinking about such an event. These hormones provide the “fight or flight” response, increased heart rate and increased blood pressure.

The converse is true.  When we have pleasant, calm or happy thoughts, the biochemical production and release of serotonin and dopamine occurs.

How you think has a direct correlation to how you feel. Since our thoughts create a cascade of chemical releases, and we know our thoughts can produce healthy or unhealthy hormones, we do have some control over our well-being.

Here are some ways to shift to calmer, happier thinking:

Focus on gratitude, being thankful, looking for the happiest moment of the day, or meditating. Ease up on perfectionism, laugh and play more. Remind yourself throughout the day to check in with your thoughts.  You could do this each time you reach for the phone, stop at a red light, just before you eat, or when you wake up and just before you go to sleep.

If you are feeling stressed, it may be time to look more closely at your thinking and choose to look at situations differently.

The Brain Simply Believes…

The Brain Simply Believes...“The brain simply believes what you tell it most.  And what you tell it about, it will create.  It has no choice.” This quote on brain research was shared at a training that I attended last week.

Did you know that we talk to ourselves at 200-400 words per minute? That’s a lot of chatter that often times we are not even aware of.

Experts in brain research say, “If you want things to be different you have to do things on purpose.” See last week’s post: It only takes 18 seconds to change your brain.

Here are some questions to consider to identify what you mostly tell yourself with related posts:

1. Do you talk to yourself as if you were your best friend or worst enemy?

2. Do you criticize yourself when you eat something you enjoy that is not healthy?

3. Is it okay to not be perfect?

4. Are you consumed with worry and stress about the future or anger and resentment about the past?

5. Do you believe you really have a choice about what you do in any situation?

6. How do you define yourself?

7. Is it possible to really feel happy?

8. Are you following an old message that it’s safer to stuff your feelings or hide them than express them and feel them?

Don’t Wait to be Sick or Injured to Give Yourself Leisure Time

Don't Wait to be Sick or Injured to Give Yourself LeisureI have had several opportunities lately to spend time with friends, including one who was in the hospital after surgery.  When recovering from surgery or a major injury or illness, we are forced to slow down, and then we realize the tension and stress we have been carrying while rushing around to get it all done. Our minds and bodies can handle a lot, but at what price? Without some leisure time we often don’t get to slow down enough to listen to our thoughts, our intuition and our bodies.

Today, spend some time slowing down and incorporate some leisure into your day.  Go for a leisurely walk, hike, swim or bike ride, browse a store, read a book or magazine, drive at the pace of other cars rather than passing them, or any other activity done for the pure enjoyment of it.

Love, Health & Happiness,

Phyllis
