Is Overeating Preventing You From Reaching Your Full Potential?

Is Overeating Preventing You From Reaching Your Full PotentialIf a plant gets too much water or sunlight it dies or doesn’t grow to its full potential.  If a human eats too much food on a regular basis, it too doesn’t grow to its full potential, creating physical disease and a poor self-image that can affect all areas of life from relationships to work.

For us humans, the effects of overeating generally are not immediate. The first evidence of overeating is usually weight gain, and that may not be immediate, but rather tends to “creep up” on us. It may take decades for illness to set in. Many people are not aware of having high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure or heart disease, because these don’t have recognizable symptoms until they become severe enough.

Being mindful of both what and how much you eat and drink, is the first step to awareness, regardless of whether you want or are ready to make any changes.

Spend Some Time In NatureEnjoy the beauty of nature.  Regardless of the weather, bundle up if where you are is cold and feel the cool air on your cheeks, and if the sun is out, feel the warmth of the sun on your face.

Is there a place you can go to, a park, the mountains, the beach? Somewhere where you can connect with nature? Listen to the sounds of birds, the wind, the waves, or the quiet.

Being in nature, among trees and plants, has a calming effect on our body and nervous system.  Notice how you feel when you are in nature.

One of My Favorite Guided MeditationsThis morning I was up at 4am to take my husband to the airport.  An early morning, a late night, and/or traveling can throw off my energy level, leaving me feeling like I’m on droop.

I’m going to share my go-to meditation that I use when traveling and when I really need to make up for lost sleep. To me, it feels like equivalent of 2-4 hours of sleep. I came across this guided meditation over 15 years ago and it is available at no cost on the Silva Life System website. I am not affiliated with this company and am not promoting the purchase of any products.

To learn more about the Silva Centering Exercise/Meditation and to access it click here. Access does not require any sign-up and it’s downloadable!

Care or Curse Your Body?

On a continuum, of lovingly caring for your body on one end, and cursing your body on the other, where do you see your level of care? Do you feel let down or betrayed by your body? Do you appreciate all that it does for you?

We only get one body, and the messages we tell ourselves about our body can significantly affect how well we care for ourselves. What if treating your body with kindness was the answer to feeling better, less stressed, more confident, and possibly the answer to overcoming an illness, injury or weight issue?

You only get one body. Treat it with the kindness, love, respect and care that it and you deserve.

Why should I go out of my way to exercise? How about to have a healthy body with good posture, to be fit, decrease stress, elevate mood, increase energy, and contribute to a strong immune system and well-functioning metabolism?  Or to increase strength, flexibility, coordination and circulation?

Regular exercise may also help with weight loss and weight management.  Keep in mind that you can never exercise enough to burn excess calories consumed by indulgent eating, over eating or to make up for poor eating habits.

Treat your body to some movement.  Find what works for you: walk, run, jog, bike, skate, ski, use a treadmill, elliptical, stair climber, mini-trampoline, DVD, attend classes, do yoga… Just get moving!

Cold Weather and Physical Activity

As the weather is getting colder, do you feel like hibernating? It’s easy to look outside and decide that it’s too dark out or too cold out to leave your home, yet alone go out and exercise.

If you are one of those people who don’t like winter weather, you may choose to workout at home to a DVD or with your own equipment: weights, an exercise bicycle, a treadmill or mini-trampoline.

For those who feel invigorated by the cold weather, the proper clothing and accessories can make all the difference in being comfortable.  Dress in layers of breathable material (wicking clothes and socks), wear a hat to keep your body heat in, gloves to keep your hands warm, and a breathable jacket designed for your specific weather (cold, freezing temperatures, rain or snow). If you are out for a walk, a run, bike ride, skiing, ice skating or chasing a ball, remember to also wear sun screen on your face and lips.

Bacteria, Bacteria and Plaque, Dental floss, Dentist, Flossing, going to the dentist, gum disease, Healthy Body, Healthy Gums, Healthy Lifestyle, Heart disease

Yesterday I went to the dentist for a cleaning. There were many years in the past, when I didn’t floss regularly and my family knew that I would be going to the dentist soon, because that’s when they would see me floss.

I believe I was able to “skate by” because of my otherwise healthy lifestyle and eating habits. Flossing removes bacteria and plaque that form on your gums and teeth, and when you don’t floss, not only do you put yourself at risk for gum disease and cavities, but you may also be putting your entire health at risk since plaque and bacteria can be absorbed into your blood stream via your gums.

Several studies have linked gum disease with heart disease. So if you haven’t flossed in a while, be gentle as you begin.  If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth or floss, after a few days the bleeding should reduce or stop.  If not, you probably should see your dentist and be checked for gum disease. And if you haven’t had a cleaning in over 6 months, it’s time!

Take a Stretch Break

Too much sitting, especially at the computer, can cause our bodies to become stiff, sore and lethargic.  Have you noticed your posture when you sit for hours? Our bodies were designed to move, not sit at a desk for extended periods of time.

Take a stretch break every hour, walk around, gently reach for the sky, do shoulder shrugs, march in place, walk a flight of stairs or go outside for a 5-minute walk.

Taking a stretch break not only improves circulation, it gives your body a break from being in the same position doing repetitive work.

My gas tank was on empty and the thought of having to push my car was stressful. How often do we think about how we push ourselves when we are running on empty?

Our vehicles have gas tanks and fuel gauges, and if we pay attention so do our bodies. If we don’t override our feelings we can tune into when we are hungry, tired or mentally fatigued. It is often said that people take better care of their cars than they do of themselves. So today, take a short break when you need to, fuel your body with healthy foods and water so it can function optimally, and go to sleep when you feel tired.

Phyllis

Have You Found The Lifestyle That Works For Your Body? Many components make up a healthy body, including what we eat and drink, how much we sleep, some physical activity and relaxation.

Let’s look at each one:

1. What we eat and drink: A healthy diet, made up primarily of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds and lentils has been shown to prevent and reverse diet related symptoms and diseases. Also, since our bodies are made up mostly of water, it makes sense to make this our “beverage of choice.”

2. Sleep: Recent research has shown how important sleep is for our basic functioning and the ability to reach and maintain a healthy body weight.

3. Physical Activity: Movement helps with circulation, burning calories, increasing your metabolism, building agility, stamina and strength. It can also improve mood, blood pressure and build a strong core and back.

4. Relaxation: For some people a regular practice of meditation, deep breathing, Feldenkrais or yoga serves as a way of relaxing the body and the mind.

Love, Health & Happiness,

Phyllis
