Something To Look Forward To (Part 2)Last week I wrote about the benefits of having something to look forward to in “What are you looking forward to?” Today, lets look at some ideas of what you might consider looking forward to and putting on the calendar. Select some things that are fun, special or different, to do today, tomorrow, in a week, in a month, next season and/or next year.

Here’s a list to get you started:

Getting together with a friend or two for a walk, lunch or tea

Going to the movies

Game night at home or with another family

Play time at a park

A trip to the zoo, amusement park or miniature golf

A vacation to another area, state or country

Bowling, skating, skiing, swimming, or playing tennis

A weekend away

Attending a concert, play or sporting event

Your birthday

Being pampered with a facial or massage

A drive to the mountains or beach

Play tourist in your own backyard or the next city over

Trying a new restaurant

Participating in a 5k, 10k, half-marathon or full marathon

Celebrating the next holiday on the calendar

May you, your friends and family, have lots of things to look forward to this year!

Love, Health & Happiness,

What Are You Looking Forward ToNo matter what your age, having something to look forward to that’s fun, special or different can help us get through our day-to-day routine.

Anticipating an upcoming event, outing or get-together, builds excitement and may even cause us to daydream about it, similar to being in meditation.

When have something to look forward to we may experience ourselves smiling more, being more kind to others and ourselves, and more tolerant of things that normally annoy us. In other words, having something to look forward may have a positive affect on our happiness, well-being, and even our productivity.

What are you looking forward to?

When was the last time you felt someone give you their undivided attention? Our lives, and especially the lives of children today, are so busy, filled with things to do and places to be, that we rarely stop long enough to acknowledge each other, yet alone take the time to really listen.

Here are some suggestions to increase connections with people of all ages who matter to you:

1. Make eye-contact.

2. Stop what you are doing long enough to be present.

3. Schedule some one-on-one time to talk, laugh, play and have fun.

4. Give your full attention to the other person so that they may feel seen and heard.

5. Listen with interest.

6. Be curious and ask questions.

7. Put judgments aside.

8. Reply with kindness, encouragement or something positive.

9. Share your happiest moments of the day with each other.

Phyllis

Flow, Flow: The Classic Work on How to Achieve Happiness, Fun, Martin Seligman, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Positive Psychology, Psychology

What brings out the fun in you? Do you allow yourself to enjoy activities without being concerned about results?  Are playing games fun?  What about doing puzzles?  Do you like social fun?

When was the last time you got so involved in an activity that you lost all track of time?  This is called being in “flow.” Proposed by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, the positive psychology concept Flow is the mental state of operation in which a person in an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity.  The state of flow can happen while creating something artistic, writing, cooking, building something, playing a sport, walking or running, playing a game, gardening, or almost any other activity.  It can happen while you are doing something alone or with others.

If you have children or spend time with children, teach and model having fun.  There is way too much to be serious about in the adult world.  The problems of the world will not be solved by worrying about them.  In fact, they just may be solved by us connecting with ourselves and each other having fun and getting along better.

Love, Health & Happiness,

Phyllis

Rather than rewarding with food, use words, activities, outings, or athletic apparel or equipment.  The gift of time with your children is one of the greatest gifts you can give them.  Engage with them in an activity that they like, play a game together, or take a walk together.  Kids of all ages, whether they want to admit it or not, value time their parents.

Don’t reward with candy or other sweets.

Reward with words not food:

Great job! You’re terrific!

I like how you made healthy choices today.

I admire how you chose to call a friend when you wanted to eat but weren’t hungry.

It was fun walking/running/biking/playing at the park with you today.

Reward to promote physical activity with:

a jump rope, a hula hoop, a kite, a baseball & glove, a football, a soccer ball, a basket ball, a badminton set, a Frisbee, a volleyball, pool toys

a yoga or exercise DVD, purchased or checked out from the library

an athletic shirt, shorts, socks or shoes

a book about a sport they like or a sports team or individual athlete

Reward with outings:

to the park, to the movies, a shopping trip to the mall, to the zoo, to see a live performance of a play or a concert, or to an amusement park

to see a live sporting event, a baseball, football, basketball or hockey game

Love, Health & Happiness,

Phyllis
