When was the last time you played an old-fashioned board game? Playing board games can be a great way to bond with your children, grandchildren, adult children and other adults. Many games such as Clue, Scrabble and Monopoly, have a junior version for younger children.

Here are some suggestions for enjoyable playing:

1. Keep it fun.

2. Team up if you have too many people or pair a child with a teen or adult for more advanced games.

3. Don’t worry about the outcome and who is going to win. Just like an athlete, play your game, do your best and don’t cave into pressure. Stay focused on the game and your turn rather than on winning.

What if the winner was the person or team that had the most fun, win or lose? Play for the pure enjoyment and entertainment that games are designed for.

Perfectly Imperfect

Perfectionism is a trait often learned in childhood and carried into adulthood.  Unfortunately, functioning to do things perfectly often takes more time and energy.  It can also put us in a chronic state of feeling stressed and anxious, by the pressure we put on ourselves or the perceived pressure others put on us.

Who might you be trying to please or impress, or is it now just a habit or a way of life?

Do you hold yourself back from having people over because your home isn’t perfectly decorated, straightened up, or spotless with everything in its place? Or have you refused to do something that looks like fun, like tennis, golf, knitting, or any other activity, because you aren’t very good at it yet?

Those of us who have been perfectionists miss out on enjoying the process along the way, and seeing the beauty in things rather than the flaws. There is a better way. It’s okay to be “good enough,” for our living space to be clean enough, and for us to slow down and not rush or spend so much time on a task until it is perfect, that we never complete it or that we resent the amount of time spent on it.

If you wait for everything to be perfect you will miss out on the enjoyment of life.  Allow yourself to be good enough. Aim for enjoyment. Set your priorities, and determine where it is worth producing a perfect result and where good enough will suffice.  And while you are at it, don’t expect others to be perfect either.

Phyllis

Choices, Choices, Choices!

Choices, Choices, Choices!Have you ever wanted to say, “Do I have to?”  What if you don’t want to do something like go to work, finish that project, clean house, cook a healthy meal, or exercise?  You always have the choice to do or not do  ___________ (fill in the blank), as long as you are willing to live with the consequences.

Our life is made up of the choices we make.  Every moment we are choosing to do something rather than something else.  Most of our choices are habitual. While you may not like what you are doing, you very well may like the result.  This could be earning a paycheck from working, waking up to a clean kitchen by cleaning it after dinner, or feeling fit by getting regular physical activity.

Choose one thing today that you can do, even though you don’t enjoy doing it, but you like the results.  Focus on the benefits.  You may feel different and actually be able to find enjoyment in the process.

Love, Health & Happiness,

Phyllis
