Stargazing, Sunrises and SunsetsWhen is the last time you looked at the night sky, I mean really took the time to notice the stars and the moon? Or marveled at a beautiful sunrise or sunset? Stargazing and watching a sunrise or sunset are activities that adults and children can enjoy together.

There is something magical about looking at the sky by day or by night. It can put us in a feeling of awe or in touch with our sense of wonder.

Take some time this weekend to notice the sky!

Bring Your Inner Athlete Out On The WeekendsDo your plans for the weekend include some physical activity?  Creating a regular routine on a Saturday or Sunday, morning, afternoon or evening, may help you attain the health benefits of exercise, and the discipline to continue with shorter times during the week.

The benefits of scheduling time on the weekend are:

1. Most people have an hour or two, or more for an extra long walk, run, hike, bike ride, swim, workout or classes at a gym. It allows more time to do activities you may not have time for during the week, and the time to get to your destination.

2. It gives you a chance to participate in a variety of activities that may not be offered during the week.

3. It’s easier to find a buddy or a group to go with, or join an adult sports or athletic team through your community parks and recreation.

4. The whole family can participate in something together or their own activities.

One word of caution.  Please be mindful of becoming a weekend warrior, watch that you don’t over do it on the weekend. Participate in some physical activity during the week as well. Your inner athlete will thank you!

Phyllis

Plan an Active VacationDo you like to hike, bike walk, run, kayak or swim? There are vacation destinations that will provide hours of physical activity for you and your family. Consider a hotel with a pool, a water park destination, back packing, river rafting, walking tours, or participating in a race (5k, 10k, half-marathon or full marathon) as a runner or walker.

Keep the following in mind when planning an active vacation:

1. The ages, abilities and skill level of those going and what is realistic for each family member.

2. Equipment and attire, for example, proper shoes (running shoes, hiking boots, sturdy walking shoes, water shoes) and clothing (shorts, swimsuit).

3. Check ahead of time to verify what is included at the site or tour; equipment, meals, the hours, lockers, guided tours, group tours, rental fees, package deals, minimum age, minimum height, and any health limitations or risks.

4. Involve the whole family in the planning and keep the focus on having FUN!

Cultivating Self-DisciplineSelf-discipline is defined as training and control of oneself and one’s conduct, usually for personal improvement. How do we learn self-discipline and teach it to our children?

Self-discipline can be reinforced by earning rewards along the way or at the end of reaching a goal, such as mastering a skill, establishing a regular physical activity routine or losing 10 pounds. Fear can be another motivator, especially when your health is at stake.

When what we have to do to reach our goal conflicts with what we want to do, or don’t want to do, the inner-conflict usually wins and we talk ourselves out of doing what is necessary to move towards our goal.  Self-improvement takes time and effort.  In order to master a musical instrument, language or athletic skill, we must practice. The same can be said with most goals, we must do something different and practice that behavior until it becomes part of us.  We may be drawn back into our old routine, or prefer to be spontaneous and have fun, when we  need to spend 20 minutes being self-disciplined.

While self-discipline is easier for some adults and children, and more difficult for others, it comes down to finding the willingness to take small steps in the direction of our goals, even when we don’t feel like it. It may be helpful for both adults and children to use a chart to visually track their progress.  See Sticker Charts for Children and Adults.

Anticipating an upcoming event, outing or get-together, builds excitement and may even cause us to daydream about it, similar to being in meditation.

When have something to look forward to we may experience ourselves smiling more, being more kind to others and ourselves, and more tolerant of things that normally annoy us. In other words, having something to look forward may have a positive affect on our happiness, well-being, and even our productivity.

Building Capable Young Adults

Building Capable Young AdultsIn order for children to grow up as capable adults, they must have experiences of successfully carrying out responsibilities.

In addition to children taking care of their own space and belongings, parents can make learning tasks fun by involving their children in age appropriate “mini-jobs” at home.  This may include helping with laundry, setting the table, doing the dishes, taking care of a pet, cooking, building something, gardening, etc.

Remember, learning a new skill is a process and may take time.  The goal is to teach, and not expect perfection in childhood, but to instill a sense of capability that your child will take into adulthood.

When we do too much for our children or get frustrated with how they carry out a task, we can mistakenly give them the message that they are not capable and we don’t believe in them. In turn, they may doubt their own worth and capabilities, and  their avoidance can look like laziness.

Cheer your kids on with an enthusiastic, “You can do it!” And let them know that you are there for them if they need help. All they have to do is ask.

Phyllis

Brain Compatable New Years Resolutions

If your New Years resolutions don’t have significant meaning to you, they most likely will fall by the wayside quickly.  With that said, think about what you really want for 2013, and why.

How would you like to feel about each resolution? Imagine what it would really look like and feel like to have what you desire. Do you have feeling words or a visual picture, either in your mind or in print, that capture your goals?

To get your brain on board, you may want to create a “personal poster” with words and/or pictures that capture your resolutions, and then focus on it for 18 seconds a day. Or, write down the feeling words and post them on your mirror or refrigerator to see multiple times a day. When we rehearse, imagine, or talk to ourselves about something for 18 seconds, it gets stored in our long-term memory. This also keeps our thoughts congruent with our desires, and when this happens, it propels us towards activities and behaviors that produce the results we are looking for.

Gather your family or a friend or two and have fun creating meaningful resolutions for the new year!

Love, Health & Happiness,

Phyllis

Family ReflectionWhat will you remember most from 2012? Gather your family members and look back over the past 12 months, four seasons, birthdays, holidays, and other significant life events.

What were the happiest moments? What difficulties did you overcome? Did you master a skill?

Reflecting on our experiences gives us a chance to look at what worked and why.  Similarly, it can be of great benefit to look at what didn’t go well and why. Then take it one step further, and consider what you would do different if you were faced with that same situation again in the future.

Look at what you lost and what you gained. Grieve your losses and disappointments and leave them behind. Be grateful for all that you have and all that you are, and take that into 2013.

Love, Health & Happiness,

Phyllis
